It’s not depression, but it is definitely not flourishing. You feel exhausted, have no motivation and even feel numb. You just go through the motions and you feel stuck.
The difference between depression and languishing is depression can be classified as a mental illness whereas languishing is a feeling. But, of course without attention languishing can lead to depression. Here are five signs of languishing:
Restlessness -Having energy, but not knowing exactly what to do or what you even want to do with it
Low Self-worth – You don’t grow, you don’t feel like you have anything to contribute and you can also stop self-care as you feel you are not worth it
Isolating yourself – Not wanting to go out. Cutting yourself off from your family, friends and support system
Struggling with everyday tasks – Fixing food for yourself, brushing teeth, cleaning
Missing work – Making excuses to call out of work, not being able to focus when you are work, leaving early from work
Two of the best ways to try and prompt yourself out of Languishing are:
Plan a vacation: Changing your surroundings can do a world of good. Sometimes you just need to see different things and even different people to give you a new perspective. Doesn’t have to be a long trip or even a trip out of town. Just get away for a while and experience something other than the routine
Self-help audiobooks: Not video, but audio. You can get lost just starring at audio, but video you focus on listening and hearing good advice and/or uplifting material can propel you into a different state of mind and even into action
